Hunt Valley, MD – The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is utilizing Sheridan’s proprietary XML-based article workflow, Article Express™, for their industry-leading journal, Pediatrics.
Pediatrics is the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the world’s leading pediatrics resource. The monthly peer-reviewed publication is the most cited journal in the field and among the top 100 most-cited journals in all of science and medicine. It has been continuously published by the AAP since 1948.
ArticleExpress is Sheridan’s new patent-pending workflow for STM publishers that replaces the traditional PDF-based article proof with a fully editable, browser-based, HTML proofing environment. In this new workflow, authors, editors, and publishers can easily review and directly edit article content in a browser application while still maintaining the structure of the underlying XML. In addition to reviewing and editing traditional article content, the HTML presentation allows authors to review online-only elements such as multi-media content, supplemental material, and a variety of linked elements.
ArticleExpress also includes a fully automated, XML-based composition system that produces a PDF for download and review, and final PDFs for print and online delivery. As changes to content are introduced, reviewed, and approved through the web-editing environment, the underlying XML is automatically updated, and revised PDF proofs are generated. So while traditional composition and proof review processes can get bogged down in rounds of proof correction and review, ArticleExpress streamlines the process completely, bringing published content to audiences more rapidly.
When AAP implemented the ArticleExpress workflow, they also launched a continuous publishing model, releasing final versions of every article as soon as they become available. Additionally, an Abstract Only print version of the publication is now available.
Joe Puskarz, Director, Division of Journal Publishing for Pediatrics commented, “Article Express was an excellent investment into the journal’s workflow processes. The system allows our authors to view rich HTML proofs and gives them confidence that their changes will be accurately implemented in the XML file. The intuitive web-editing environment not only minimizes editing errors, but has streamlined our production cycle to quickly publish articles within our continuous publishing model. We have seen a higher degree of workflow efficiencies and cost savings for Pediatrics by using Sheridan’s new proofing and editing system.”
Mike Hepp, Sheridan Director of Technology Strategy, added, “Although it can be configured for implementation in a variety of workflows, ArticleExpress was engineered from the ground up to be optimized for continuous article publishing workflows. Working with the Pediatrics journal and the AAP staff gave us the opportunity to really leverage the application’s capabilities for the benefit of the publisher and for the authors who use it. From the very first issue of Pediatrics we’ve seen an 85% or higher author usage of the web editing system over annotating and returning PDFs. The results of the collaboration and cooperation of both the AAP and Sheridan teams is something we’re very proud of and we look forward to delivering ongoing enhancements to AAP, the Pediatrics journal, and their authors.”
